at the main conference and at our pre-conference for junior researchers on 24th September 2017.Educational research and questions of governance are closely linked in a number of ways. Firstly, educational research examines effects, consequences and the efficacy of governance on different levels and addresses structures of governance in general from an empirical and analytical perspective (e.g. Maag Merki & Astleitner, 2015; Schrader et al., 2015). Secondly, empirical educational research claims to provide important scientific insights and knowledge to political leaders and decision makers (e.g. Köller, 2015; Tippelt & Schmidt, 2010). This claim in turn launches a debate on the opportunities and limits of the same (e.g. Dammer, 2015; Tenorth, 2011). This leads to questions of a communicative interface between the scientific and political systems respectively, more precisely to the question of how scientific findings relevant to educational governance are conveyed to political leaders and decision makers. Empirical research on the reception of relevant research projects in politics and educational practice are of great interest in this context. Additionally, empirical educational research itself is affected by processes of governance, for example through the political nature of research funding in general, the public funding basis of research institutions or, indirectly, through the governance of tertiary education based for example on performance indicators (Hicks, 2009; Hurtado & Pryor, 2011).
The conference offers a platform to discuss empirical projects related to the one or more aspects of the interaction between governance and educational research or educational research in general, ranging from educational, psychological or sociological works to subject specific didactics and methodology. Prior to the main conference, on 24th September 2017, a pre-conference for students, postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers will be held, in the course of which junior researchers are given the opportunity to present their projects in colloquia, partake in discussions and deepen their knowledge on research methods.
